Two different REDCap systems are available to researchers. The purpose of the different systems is to minimize risk of data exposed to the internet.
REDCap Internal is contained within the Wake Forest Baptist Health network. This means that access to REDCap Internal from computers outside of the WFBH network is available only through the Portal or VPN. Most projects should be created within REDCap Internal, but there are instances where building on REDCap External is necessary.
REDCap External is protected by the same level of security as Internal, but it is not contained within the Wake Forest Baptist Health network. This means that access to REDCap External from computers outside of the WFBH network is available at all times. Users should choose REDCap External if their projects have either a public-facing survey or they are working with external collaborators. Non-research projects, such as event registrations, that need a public-facing survey should also be hosted through REDCap External.
